Dr Desmond Graham
Dr Desmond Graham (also known as Dr Des) is an aged care specialist known as a geriatrician. Preferring to be known as a ‘Healthy Ageing Specialist’, he is passionate about educating and empowering the community about how to remain active and independent as we age. He believes we need to be more ‘proactive’ about the management of our health, rather than ‘reactive’. Dr Des hopes to educate the community about what practical tools can be implemented to prevent or slow the development of medical conditions with the aim of minimising admissions to hospital and promoting Healthy Ageing.
Dr Des’ passion for Healthy Ageing came from seeing the inequalities in the delivery of healthcare. Growing up in Broken Hill, in regional country New South Wales, he saw the challenges family and friends faced in accessing not only specialist medical services but also the educational tools to maintain their health and wellbeing. This drove him to pursue a career in healthcare.
Dr Des has over 14 years of medical training and experience starting with completing one year of nursing at the University of Tasmania, before transitioning to Newcastle University to complete Medical School Training. Following university, he moved to Sydney, where he currently resides, and works as an aged care specialist – geriatrician. He is an active member of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine and lecturers at the University of Sydney. Being awarded the Alek Safarian Scholarship, he is currently completing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Sydney, to further develop the tools needed to enact meaningful, long-lasting change within the healthcare sector.
Dr Des is the Lead Geriatrician at Geriatric Care Australia, where he leads a team of geriatricians that support patients in the community and over video telemedicine. To learn more about how to book an appointment with a geriatrician see here: how to book
